Massachusetts hasn’t set a launch date for its online sports betting market. However, the state will launch in-person wagering on January 31. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission approved the date last Thursday.

On January 31, three casinos will open retail sportsbooks. They are the Plainridge Park Casino, MGM Springfield, and the Encore Boston Harbor.

After the Supreme Court knocked down the federal ban on sports betting in 2018, this debut was the quickest in history. Six months after the state’s August 1 legalization of sports betting, retailers will begin offering wagering options.

According to gambling news reports, retail sportsbooks will have a soft launch on January 30. Then, they will use that opportunity to test their sports betting software. Finally, the three casinos will start taking wagers on sports on January 31.

Three internet gambling licenses were issued to the casinos’ three associated sportsbooks, with BetMGM being the lone conditional licensee pending satisfactory completion of certification criteria. In addition, regulators investigated Barstool due to responsible gambling and integrity issues.

The time frame for the introduction of mobile sports betting has not been disclosed.

Massachusetts is the 15th most populous state in the US, the largest east coast state to authorize sports betting after New York. In 2023, Massachusetts will join Ohio as the second state to provide in-person and online gambling legally. After launching retail betting in December 2021, Maryland went live with internet betting in November 2022.

On February 12, just in time for Super Bowl LVII, retail betting in Massachusetts will go live. Then, college basketball fans can expect March Madness a few weeks later.
